Driver Updates – Free Program
Update August 2009:
Updated article due to changes to DriverMax program
DriverMax 5.1 -- Free Driver Updates
How often do you find that your drivers are out of date, maybe you have used PCPitstop’s Optimise to give your PC a health check and found outdated drivers, or maybe you haven’t looked for driver updates.
After downloading follow the prompts and create a free account with a valid email, this is where your FREE Registration Code will be sent.
This superb little free program does all of the work for you. You can export your drivers to a folder or Zip file, back it up to a usb device or burn it to CD/DVD so that should you have to reinstall your OS you can save a great deal of time reinstalling the drivers.
You can also Import your drivers after a format, generate a list of installed drivers and save it to a text file or view it in your browser.
The best part is that it will also scan your computer for all drivers and check for newer versions. When it finds them a new browser window opens which will show you a list of installed drivers, a green checkmark meaning they are up to date and a red circle with a white cross meaning their is a newer version available for download.
All you have to do is click the link on the right and it will open a new browser window with a selection of drivers for your device, click the download link and it will then prompt you to confirm, click yes and it will download the file to Drivermax Agent.
It may be queued to save your internet bandwidth and be held in the ‘Download and upload’ queue and when a slot is available it will download the file which will then appear in ‘Drivers already downloaded’.
Simply click ‘Install driver’ on the left and it will ask for confirmation, click Yes and also if your firewall prompts for permission please allow it. The program will then scan the archives following which a new window opens, click ‘Next’ and in many cases it will uninstall the previous driver before installing the new driver.
When installing new drivers ensure that all browser windows and explorer windows are closed. Again, it will ask for confirmation, click ‘Yes’ and it will proceed with the installation of your new drivers.
Once installed you will need to reboot to finalise the installation. Should you encounter any problems with the new drivers you can go to device manager and Roll Back the driver to the previous version.
It saves a lot of searching through different vendors websites for updated drivers and you can also click on Available updates tab on the Driver Agent window, click on each update and it will take you to the download page and again simply click the download link.
You can download all of the available updates to the Driver Agent and then select ALL to be installed.

Once you have the program installed, after its initial run and registration process, STOP 'devices.exe' from starting each time you boot your PC. If you use WinPatrol or CCleaner you can disable the process otherwise remove it from your Startup Folder as it is an unnecessary resource which has been reported to have high CPU usage as it scans in the background for newer drivers. It is much simpler to run this program manually as and when you need to. I use it every 4 to 6 weeks to check for driver updates.
Please read the update at the start of this article.
