HostsXpert and Hosts Files
HostsXpert is a free program which gives users greater control over their Hosts File.
It is a very simple to use program that requires little knowledge to use, allowing users to add sites to their Hosts and block them and as there is no installation it can be run from a flash drive on any computer.
This is a useful feature as many users have asked about blocking specific sites that they do not want their children going to, so users can customize it fairly simply as the video will show.
If you have a malware infection that redirects you to other sites this can often be rectified by using this program to restore the default Hosts without having to open the file located in system32/Drivers/Hosts/etc and modifying it with Notepad.
This program is so easy to use and can import updated hosts files from hpHosts and MPVS, which can also be merged into one database but it is better to use one or the other as many will be duplicated.
hpHosts I highly recommend and use myself.
Using this program to update your Hosts, the DNS Client needs to be stopped to update from MPVS and hpHosts.
Simply go to Start, then Run, type in services.msc and click OK.
Scroll down to DNS Client, right click and select Properties and in the new window use the drop down box beside Startup type: and change it to Manual also click on 'Stop' to stop the service from running then click OK and then close the Services window.
By adding sites to the Restricted Zone and using the Hosts files it adds an extra layer of protection to your computer by blocking sites that may track your viewing habits as well as many of the rogue adware/ spyware programs, hijackers and many other parasites encountered while surfing.
