Secunia Personal Software Inspector is a free security tool for personal use which can be used either online or users can download it to their computers and run it which covers more programs than the online scanner.
It will quickly scan your computer and detects insecure versions of many common programs installed as well as end of life programs.
It will verify that all Microsoft patches are applied and alert users to those that are not, providing an easy download link to update unpatched programs which could leave computers at risk.
It is easier for hackers to exploit these flaws and vulnerabilities and around 98% of computers have 1 or more insecure programs installed on them.
Normally, users would depend on Windows Update to deliver the necessary system patches and for other programs scour the internet to find updates, which can be quite time consuming.
Use the settings so that it runs on Windows boot and it will sit in the taskbar monitoring your programs for those that are at risk and have patches available.
Create a Secunia profile which requires your name, username and email address.
Confirmation will ve sent to the email address given, click the link to validate and PSI will then be able to connect to Secunia's secure servers.
Simply click on the 'Download Solution' and it will connect to the program vendors site and users can then download the latest security patches and updates.
Secunia PSI is a very simple and easy to use and when programs have been patched there is a small balloon tip window that opens informing users of the patched programs.
If you have external drives attached where you may have backed up program files etc. it will also scan these and in some instances it is better to disconnect external drives and create new backups.
If using incremental backups the files will be overwritten with the patched version.
Users can always check this and delete any previous versions that remain.
In particular, if updating Java it is important to uninstall ALL previous versions which will give greater security and stability.
Administrative privileges are required to run this program, as well as access to the Secunia servers which are encrypted via SSL (https://) and access to Windows Update servers
