Registry Mighty – How To Ruin Your PC
Posted Under: Free PC Security, ID Theft, rogue software
I came across this piece of software and decided to give it a go.
Now, I am NOT a fan of Registry Cleaners / Optimizers as more often than not they will do more harm than good.
Cleaning the Registry requires only one tool as supplied with Windows: RegEdit.
If you are unfamiliar with RegEdit then please leave it alone and if you have problems seek advice from those who know what they are doing.
I downloaded this program to see if it lived up to its promises to 'Fix PC errors & Speed Up PC'.
It was loaded on to a Windows XP SP3 PC which had recently been formatted, the operating system, patches and updates reinstalled along with other programs.

Registry Mighty

Cutting-Edge Diagnostics and Repair

Hard Drive Capacity and Used Space
The Registry size was 94.5MB, a 35GB Hard Drive with 8.57GB Used Space, CPU 2.00 Ghz and 1.5GB RAM.
The Registry had been checked for errors, CHKDSK run, Temp files removed, system rebooted then installed 'Registry Mighty'.

Select Scan Options
Select the options for scanning, so I accepted the default to 'Select All' and then proceeded to scan.
Now most of these so-called scanners will scan in well under an hour, and frequently less than 20 minutes.
Over one hour later and this was still scanning and had only reached 12% and had found 135 ActiveX OLE/COM Entries and 2623 Empty Registry Keys.

Scan Progress Over One Hour Later
This was a long scan, so I decided to let it run overnight hoping that it would have finished when I came back to it.
Not in this case, it was still at 12% after 13 hours and 20 minutes of scanning and it was still scanning 'Empty Registry Keys', and had 'found' 7874 empty keys on top of the 135 ActiveX problems, giving a total of 8009 problems found after 13 hours and still scanning, having 'processed' 5798400 items!

The Never-Ending Scan
At this point I decided to abort the scan, this was beyond a joke with the length of time taken and the number of apparent problems found.
I changed the scan settings to exclude ''ActiveX' and 'Empty Registry Keys' and started again (I'm a glutton for punishment)

Alternate Scan Excluding ActiveX and Empty Registry Keys
If you purchase this software, with such a lengthy and in-depth scan this will destroy your Registry and render your computer useless.
Along with any prospective purchase of this junk users will also receive 'Advanced Defrag' and 'Driver Checker' FREE!
You will also be scammed and a possible victim of ID Theft and Fraud.

The Checkout Page
Over the weekend the vendors have changed their site layout and this offer has been extended until March 10th.
Whatever you do, KEEP WELL AWAY from such programs, they ARE a scam no matter how professional the page looks, they are well organised and only want your money and ID.
Please also read this comment from someone who did purchase this program.
This program has been added to my list of Rogue Programs
For those who insist that the registry needs cleaning, use a safe program such as Eusing Free Registry Cleaner which will make a backup and do no damage.
