TDSS Removal Tool – Updated
TDSS, TDSServ and variants continue to plague users and compromise PC Security. I had previously written about this but the removal tool from AVG was only compatible with Windows XP, and 2000, with limited success on Vista.
Now there is another free standalone utility which will remove all TDSS variants and any other rootkits it my find.
This tool has added support for Windows 7 and works on WinVista, XP and 2000 -- please note that it only supports 32bit machines.
Simply download the zip file and extract the contents to your desktop and a folder icon called ‘remover’ will appear. Before double clicking this ensure that ALL running programs are stopped and all work is saved.
Also ensure that your Temp files are cleaned out. Use CCleaner and click Options > Advanced and UNTICK 'Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 24 hours'.
Administrator privileges are required to run this tool. Users may be prompted to reboot when the program starts, if this is requested please do so to allow more thorough searching and removal, especially as rootkits tend to hide themselves and this option allows searching hidden files.
Do NOT tick all of the boxes, check them carefully as some relate to other security applications that you may have installed.
After running the tool it will be necessary to reboot to finalise the removal of any rootkits or trojans found.
It would then be wise to download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware free version, install, update and perform a Quick Scan.
