Microsoft Security Essentials V1 – Free Security Software

Microsoft have now publicly released their latest free pc security offering which is Microsoft Security Essentials, absolutely free with realtime antimalware protection.

Simple to install and simple to use, realtime protection and on-demand scans as well as scheduled scans and automatic updating. Microsoft say that definitions will be no older than eight hours as their databases will be updated with the latest definitions frequently.

Although it is classed as an antivirus, it is more an antimalware program and runs well alongside other antivirus programs. Microsoft say that ALL security programs should be removed, but I have had the beta version running with Avast with no problems whatsoever.

Personally, I find that a 'layered' approach to security works far better so my advice would be to keep your existing antivirus and any other applications that you may use such as SpywareBlaster, Spybot S&D, Spyware Doctor or whatever you use.

With Microsoft Security Essentials there are no nag screens, no toolbars or other junk installed with it and there is no pro version, but users MUST pass Windows Validation before installation, which will cause a few to gripe I am sure.

Installation is simple and requires a reboot to activate the program.

Once you have rebooted, you must ensure that Real-time protection is on, if the interface is red it has either found malware or protection is turned off. Simply click the button to turn it on.

Resources are low and it does block most of the malware that is lurking on the internet, but also bear in mind that there is no 100% security solution and many users download malware in the form of rogue programs.

For those who like to knock Microsoft products yet use Windows, this is a good qaulity security product and it is completely FREE. Unlike many others, there is no 'Pro' or 'Upgrade'.

Important Note:
If you have Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Pro, Superantispyware Pro or any other realtime antimalware/antispyware program installed do NOT install this as it WILL conflict and do NOT install alongside with IObit Security 360.
