FreeFixer is another great free pc security tool that will help users to remove unwanted malware such as trojans, backdoor bots, password stealers, rogue programs, PUP's (Potentially Unwanted Programs) and much more.

It's a small download of around 740KB and the installed program is around 1.8MB and is very low on resources when being used.

Installation is quick and simple, and the user interface is clean and easy to navigate. Once installed the program interface will open and there are links to the FreeFixer manual which gives a more detailed explanation of how the program works as well as a link to the FreeFixer Helper Forums where users can submit logfiles for further assistance if necessary.

Users need to exercise caution when deleting items, being 100% certain that it is malware or a potentially unwanted program. There is a 'more info' link beside each entry which will open a browser window with further information.

If unsure, save a logfile first and click the link to the FreeFixer helper forums to seek further assistance.

I downloaded and installed a bunch of malware and rogue applications which included browser hijackers, password stealers, trojans, browser helper objects and so on....the sort of garbage that many users get infected with either by downloading malware or 'driveby' downloads,

FreeFixer found the bulk in just a few minutes, as it scans known areas that malware hides itself and it then presents a list, some will be green which is safe and everything else needs to be carefully checked. There are also items that are not shown as they are completely safe and whitelisted as such.

In many instances, after the scan and performing the fix it will be necessary to reboot to remove objects that are locked by the system.

I decided to run Malwarebytes Anti-Malware before rebooting to see if anything else showed up and it would also save having to scan with MBAM after rebooting. I look at it as a 'safety net' and it found further items to be removed. Again, some are locked by the system and would be deleted on reboot.

Systems: Windows 2000/XP/2003/20008/Vista/7
