Facebook Virus – UPS Virus – Using SUPERantispyware

Many users are receiving emails or links to the Facebook virus and the UPS virus which, once downloaded and extracted, compromise users PC Security. There is nothing new about these but the contents do vary.

Emails apparently from 'Facebook Security' inform users that their password has been changed and they need to open the attached .zip file for the details, or from 'Your Facebook Support' informing users that users must ' submit a new, updated account agreement' and again need to open the attached .zip file.

Sadly, many are doing just that and finding that their computer security has been compromised.

The UPS virus also comes in a .zip file attached to an email. I have received a number of these and in the past 24 hours have received no less than 9 of them, all informing me that 'a parcel from 20th June could not be delivered to the addressee'......not that I was expecting one anyway!

Unsuspecting users download the .zip file to 'fill in the details' only to find that there are no details but they do get a malware infection.

If downloading any file that may be suspicious, upload it to virustotal.com so that it can be scanned for malware. In the case of many of these simply delete the email, it will save a lot of frustration.

Removal is simple enough as many antimalware vendors update their definition files fairly quickly. Normally, my first choice is Malwarebytes, but in this case I used SUPERantispyware which is also a very potent antimalware / antispyware removal tool.

SUPERantispyware is available as a free on-demand scanner or a Pro version with realtime monitoring and is a simple to install antimalware and antispyware scanner, simply follow the on-screen prompts and allow the program to install and update its definitions database.

Once installed and updated, open the user interface and click on 'Preferences' and change the 'Start-Up Options' so that the program does not load at boot if using the free version. The free version is an on-demand scanner and is an unnecessary start-up item.

Realtime Protection, Notification and First Chance Prevention are only available in the Pro version as are automatic updates.

HiJack Protection will protect your Homepage and also prevent malware from terminating the program.

The Repairs tab is one of the most useful features. many forms of malware disable the Task Manager, change Desktop Settings, disable the Control Panel and much more. The Repairs can fix many of these problems simply by clicking on the affected item and then clicking 'Repair'.

As with any antispyware / antimalware program it is essential that users update regularly so that they have recent definition files updated just in case they do become infected with malware.

Operating Systems: Windows 98, 98SE, ME, 2000, XP, Vista or Windows 2003 - There is no mention that it supports Windows 7 but I have run it with no problems.
