Online Armor Free Firewall Version 4 is a free firewall which adds great protection to your pc security. Before installing any new firewall it is important to uninstall any existing firewall and reboot, also ensure that the Windows Firewall is enabled during this process, and once installed, turn the Windows Firewall off.

You do not need any expertise to use Online Armor and the setup is fairly simple and the configuration is a one off event and part of the installation process.

Online Armor’s new version provides great protection from inbound threats and complete control of data leaving your computer as well as allowing you to lock down your online browsing sessions and protect yourself from malicious websites installing nasties on your machine.

The Program Guard gives you control over which programs are allowed to run on your computer. Known safe programs don’t harass you with popups, and dangerous programs will give a red warning popup so you can prevent them from running. Online Armor has a comprehensive list of known safe programs which are whitelisted and allowed to run by default. The Program Guard guards protects itself against tampering and also protects other programs from malicious code.

Should spyware or malware get onto your computer Online Armor will allow you to remove it and unwanted extensions to Internet Explorer can be removed with a single mouse-click. Unwanted programs canalso  be blocked through the Program Guard or removed completely. Online Armor also checks your HOSTS file and alerts you to any changes. The hosts file can be hijacked by malware and redirects you to sites other than your intended site. This added protection can help to prevent this.

It also has Keylogger Detection which protects your passwords and private information from being stolen by blocking the keylogger as it tries to activate and the behaviour detection ensures that even specially created or new keyloggers are detected and prevented, giving users greater control.

This is a solid personal firewall which provides solid protection quite unobtrusively. Many firewalls bug you with popups when you first install them, asking about each and every program that wants to access the internet. This firewall starts out by allowing known safe applications to access the internet and gives popups only about programs it’s unsure about. It also has a  very clever “Run Safer mode” that will allow certain programs to run with stripped-down privileges.

Online Armor offers Kernel Mode Security, Manual Updates, Execution Protection, Termination Protection, Limited Autostart Protection, Standard Mode Firewall, Standard Mode, Keylogger Detection, Tamper Protection, Script/Worm protection and Program Guard.

It is compatible with Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7 -- 32Bit machines only. It does not currently support 64Bit machines.

I have used this with the above operating systems with no problems, but please remember that just because it works for me it does not mean that it will work for you as each machine is configured differently.

I do like the simplicity of use once installed and it performs well in the Matousec Firewall Challenge, although I must add that Comodo and PC Tools, both free, perform slightly better in the Matousec Challenge and you can find them in the A-Z Index. Both have newer versions released and I will cover them in the near future.

It is very much down to personal choice and what the user is comfortable using.

I'll bear this one in mind. I quite like the one I'm using at the moment, AVG, and generally I don't have a lot of security problems for my computer but if I don't, I'll consider Online Armor. It might be a little better but as I don't really have any problems I wouldn't be sure.

Security guards - AVG is not one I would recommend as others such as Online Armor, Comodo and PC Tools do a far better task - but the essential point is what works for the end user and what they are comfortable with :)
